South Dakota Housing Development Authority Housing Conference

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]September 9-10, 2021
Ramkota Hotel & Conference Center | Pierre, SD

The South Dakota Housing Development Authority has announced its 2021 statewide housing conference where participants can take part in multiple educational sessions, engage in housing conversations, and make connections at networking events.

This year's Native track of sessions will include:

Customizing Homeownership Services for Veterans
Join a discussion about strategies to customize homeownership programming targeting veteran homebuyers. Here from members of the South Dakota Native Homeownership Coalition who have offered a range of programs including a tailored homebuyer education course, a veterans homebuying guide, and subsidies to leverage renovation financing from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We’ll also learn about pre-development plans for a housing subdivision dedicated specifically for Native American veterans.

Innovative Approaches to Post-Purchase Support in a Post-COVID Housing Market
The pandemic has impacted the financial stability of many homeowners across South Dakota. During this session, hear about funding sources that may be available to assist your clients including the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Homeownership Assistance Fund and the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Homeownership Improvement Program (HIP). Also, learn about HomeReserve, a mortgage match savings initiative launched by Prosperity Now.

Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going? Homeownership Development on the Rosebud Reservation
Tatanka Funds, an emerging CDFI serving tribal members on the Rosebud Reservation, recently held a series of “Thinking Sessions” with community members to explore what homeownership means for them, how homeownership looked in the past, and their visions for homeownership moving forward. Through these sessions, the Tatanka Funds team learned how families are interested in the concept of homesites in smaller developments to support intergenerational families and tiospaye living.

In this workshop, Tatanka Funds team members will share highlights from their community sessions, which included discussions on the impact of historical policies on today’s realities and empowered members to creatively envision a community outside the restrictions that those historical policies have caused. This session will also explore ideas around providing affordable alternatives between large-scale developments and individual secluded homesite living that can foster traditional a Lakota lifestyle in today’s world.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h="1"][vc_column_text]
